How to write a good History Essay (webpage)
The author of this website stresses a few key elements as most important for a good essay:

  • Relevance (you must really think about your thesis)
  • Make your first paragraph perfect-- it is vital to the strength of your essay
  • Be certain that your middle paragraphs actually support your stance
  • Hammer home your main point in the final paragraph
I would definitely use this website when teacher an intermediate or senior level English or History course. Students regularly need review of good essay format and this website could be very helpful at solidifying those points.

Overview and Assessment for 6+1 Traits of Writing (pdf)
The 6+1 traits of writing are:

  • Ideas
  • Organization
  • Voice
  • Word Choice
  • Sentence Fluency
  • Conventions
  • Presentation
While I might not necessarily give this handout directly to my students, I would definitely use it to inform my teaching. I would stress these seven elements to my students and perhaps even make a checklist to aide them when they edit their own work.

World History Timeline (image)
This is a very useful visual representation of the history or the world. I have this in a hard copy, and I would show it to my students in a variety of contexts: to help them understand which historical figures were alive at the same time, which wars happened at the same time, and to understand the greater historical picture. I could get students to write about two simultaneous events in history and I think it would change their perspective.
